> Relevant information provided by echocardiography for the correct management of mitral valve disease

Echocardiography is the most used diagnostic method in cardiology. It provides anatomical and functional data for clinical management of patients in all cardiac diseases.

This article reviews the echocardiographic evaluation of the different anatomic causes of mitral regurgitation, determination of its severity, treatment strategies and prognosis.

In mitral stenosis, morphological appearance of mitral valve and methods used to assess the valve area were discussed. This information is essential for selecting patients to percutaneous dilatation, which is, nowadays, the therapeutic of choice.

Considering all data provided by this method, echocardiography has become extremely important in all steps of clinical management of patients with mitral valve disease.
