Autor(es): HENRIQUE TRIA BIANCO, MARIA CRISTINA O. IZAR, FRANCISCO ANTONIO H. FONSECA
Can statins delay the progression of the aortic stenosis?
Statins are drugs that inhibit 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase, thereby blocking the synthesis of cholesterol. Since they were discovered, statins have been widely used to lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. However, analysis of cardiovascular research has revealed other important effects, referred to as pleiotropic effects. In this review, various aspects of the molecular pathogenesis of aortic stenosis will be summarized and connected to recent experimental and clinical studies that address the potential benefit of targeted drug therapy by statin in order to prevent the progression of the disease.
Key words: statins; aortic stenosis; calcification.
