O presente estudo tem o objetivo de demonstrar o desenvolvimento e o crescimento de pessoas com doença de Chagas por meio da construção gradativa do processo de participação, com autonomia e liberdade, em um grupo formado dentro do Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia, em São Paulo (SP). A investigação revelou o significado das conquistas obtidas pelos sujeitos, mediante sua participação no movimento associativo, criando a Associação dos Chagásicos da Grande São Paulo. O método utilizado, a pesquisa participativa, privilegiou o material documental do grupo desde seu surgimento: nas observações, nas discussões sobre as questões sociais que envolvem a doença de Chagas e o conhecimento dessa afecção, gerando uma nova visão dos participantes para superar as adversidades e lutar por melhores condições de vida e de saúde. Foram escolhidos três sujeitos representativos da identidade do grupo para relatar suas histórias sobre participação, sendo selecionadas as falas mais relevantes a fim de serem relacionadas com os conceitos de participação e participação social (relações sociais). O estudo demonstrou que a experiência do trabalho coletivo adquiriu uma dimensão transformadora nos sujeitos, os quais, estimulados pela participação, criaram novas formas de ação e superação diante dos limites da doença.

Participation as a factor of collective identity development of a group of patients with chagas disease

The present study was aimed at demonstrating the development and growth of individuals with Chagas disease using a gradual participation development process, with autonomy and freedom, in a group selected at Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia (São Paulo, SP). The study reported the meaning of the achievements obtained by the patients as a result of their participation in the group, creating the Association of Chagasic Patients of the Greater São Paulo. The method used was participatory investigation, giving emphasis to documents provided by the group from the very beginning: in the observations, discussions on the social issues involving Chagas disease and in the understanding of the disease, creating a new vision of the participants concerning their capacity to overcome adversities and to fight for better life and health conditions. Three subjects were chosen to represent the group and report their personal experiences regarding their participation, and the most relevant reports were chosen to be related with participation and social participation (social relationships) concepts. The study showed that the group work experience acquired a transformational character in the individuals who were encouraged by their participation and created new forms of action and to cope with the limitations of the disease.
